DECART: Designing higher Education Curricula for Agility, Resilience & Transformations

A DECART Workshop at the SEFI international conference in September 2024

At the SEFI 2024 conference at EPFL, DECART also presented a full paper, thanks to Asrun Matthiasdottir from Reykjavik University. The theme this year, “Educating Responsible Engineers”. The DECART paper presented, now in the conference proceedings, was on “EXAMINING BEST PRACTICES IN CURRICULUM DESIGN”, training future responsible engineers needs methods.
It is important for higher education leaders to be aware of the need for regularly reviewing curriculum and take part in development to ensure quality improvement.

DECART was there. It was a unique opportunity to exchange research and educational innovations on curriculum design, expecially thanks to the DECART “CODESIGNING AN EXPEDITION LEARNING SEMESTER AROUND EUROPE FOR FUTURE RESPONSIBLE ENGINEERS” workshop. It was hed in 1 hour with participants from Atlantic Technology University, Czech Technical University, Monash University, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Technical University of Denmark, and University College London. They are thanked for their fruitful collaboration which permits us to enhance the workshop for future transfers in other context than the partnership.

In the context of European energy sovereignty needs, the mission given in the workshop was, in teams, to share ideas and dream an exciting pan-European final Master-level semester on a low-carbon cruise ship. Society needs to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, transition to renewable energies including wind & solar powers, nuclear & hydrogen for electricity production. DECART models and tools, i.e. the maps and especially the curriculum canvas with its 9 components, were engaging to imagine a final MSc semester months in an imagined cruise incl. visits at prestigious technological universities and energy industries. Inter-state cooperation is needed.
