DECART: Designing higher Education Curricula for Agility, Resilience & Transformations

Stakeholder Engagement and Curriculum Transformation Workshop Held at UKZN

In May 2025, Cecile Gerwel Proches, Macdonald Kanyangale, and Angela James from Work Package 3 (WP3) of the DECART Project facilitated a workshop on Stakeholder Engagement and Curriculum Transformation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa. The event was organised with the support of the UKZN Teaching and Learning Office (UTLO).

The workshop provided an interactive platform for participants to explore the vital role of stakeholder engagement in driving curriculum transformation within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Participants engaged in a stakeholder analysis exercise using the rich pictures technique—an established systems thinking tool—allowing them to visually map and identify key stakeholders, along with their interests, influences, and concerns.

Through this exercise, participants examined the power dynamics, levels of influence, and varying interests of the diverse stakeholder groups involved in curriculum design and development. The workshop highlighted the importance of meaningful stakeholder engagement as a critical element in ensuring relevant, sustainable, and adaptable curriculum transformation processes in HEIs.

This initiative reflects the commitment of the DECART Project and UKZN to foster inclusive, systemic approaches to educational innovation and transformation.
