DECART: Designing higher Education Curricula for Agility, Resilience & Transformations

Conference Presentation on The Role of Leadership in Curriculum Transformation

UKZN’s Angela James (WP3) recently presented key research at BalticSTE 2025 in Šiauliai, Lithuania, highlighting the pivotal role of leadership in transforming STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curricula within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Authored by UKZN academics Angela James, Cecile Gerwel Proches, and Macdonald Kanyangale, alongside Valentina Dagienė and Eglė Jasutė (Vilnius University, Lithuania), and Roger Waldeck (IMT Atlantique, France), the study focused on “The Role of Leadership in Curriculum Transformation: Implications for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics in Higher Education.”

The research reveals that effective HEI leadership fosters curriculum transformation by providing crucial support and clear direction, motivating and engaging staff, and securing essential funding. The study emphasizes that successful leaders in this context don’t just enforce policies; they engage, inspire, and strategically plan for meaningful change, guiding academics and students toward an integrated and holistic approach to science education. The research underscores the challenge of balancing institutional constraints with innovation and vision with execution. A deeper understanding of these complexities can empower HEI leaders to develop more effective strategies for navigating and leading transformative change in higher education.
