DECART: Designing higher Education Curricula for Agility, Resilience & Transformations

DECART Intensive Programme for Higher Educators (IPHE3) on Curriculum Transformation held at Vilnius University

Vilnius, Lithuania – The UKZN team, comprising Cecile Gerwel Proches, Macdonald Kanyangale, and Angela James, spearheaded an engaging two-day Intensive Programme for Higher Educators (IPHE3) on Curriculum Transformation at Vilnius University from July 9-10, 2025.

Cecile and Macdonald were on-site to facilitate interactive sessions and lead discussions in this hybrid program. Day one delved into the core elements of curriculum transformation: understanding the what, why, when, where, and who. Participants actively utilized various tools to conduct stakeholder analysis, examining the power, influence, and interest of key stakeholders in the transformation process. This was followed by the development of a practical stakeholder engagement plan.

The second day kicked off with an exploration of the complexities of leadership in higher education. Participants investigated how different leadership approaches can either hinder or enable curriculum transformation, highlighting the critical role of leadership styles. The workshop also emphasized essential success factors for achieving curriculum transformation, illustrated through a “curriculum transformation web.” The program concluded with participants exploring strategies to develop curriculum transformation champions and craft a comprehensive curriculum transformation plan, all grounded in effective change management models.
